On the same day that the AR was slated to hit San Francisco, I was scheduled to present new insights into these storms at the 2016 American Geophysical Union meeting there. As big as they are, they can be fickle because numerous forces can affect their progression, from ocean-surface temperatures to pockets of cold air aloft. It's hard to know more than a few days ahead where exactly a storm will make landfall, however. They can beneficially boost snowpack and help fill natural and human-made water reservoirs. They can also reach far inland: the raging terrestrial rivers that tore apart roads in Yellowstone National Park and forced the park to close this past June were fueled in large part by a remarkably strong AR.ĪRs are not always destructive sometimes they bring welcome rain to parched regions. Several times a year they pummel the western coasts of the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa, South America and New Zealand. They can occur in families-a series of storms, as if rolling in on a treadmill. These storms can produce disastrous flooding, including the biggest floods that some areas may see in a century. An average AR brings far greater rainfall than a typical rain or thunderstorm in those parts of the world, transporting enough vapor to equal 25 times the flow rate of the Mississippi River where it pours into the Gulf of Mexico. They can grow to 2,000 miles long, 500 miles wide and two miles deep by the time they strike the western coasts of continents. The meteorological community formally defined them only in the early 2010s, after improved satellite imaging and science revealed how these storms can form far out over the remote ocean. The symbol was completely inadequate for communicating the threat of the approaching storm.ĪRs are essentially rivers of water vapor in the sky that are pushed along by strong, low-altitude winds, sometimes at hurricane speeds. I had been studying detailed satellite data and weather models, and they indicated that a major atmospheric river (AR) was likely to hit the city. I knew Thursday's conditions would be much rougher than the symbol conveyed. Wednesday had a friendly-looking cloud and a few raindrops, and Thursday had a dark, threatening cloud with heavier drops. A little symbol along the bottom showed a happy-looking sun for the rest of the day. I was eating breakfast on a Monday morning at Sears Fine Food in downtown San Francisco, casually watching the local five-day weather forecast on a television screen behind the counter. They have been well predicted and accurately forecast. Scientific American recently explained how meteorologists have become so much better at doing this work so quickly. Editor’s Note (3/13/23): Atmospheric rivers have been inundating California with record rainfall and snow depth, causing flooding.

That’s because listening is critical in times of crisis.įront-line workers, for example, need emotional support. Demonstrating empathy “requires stepping outside of your own needs, assessing and removing bias and privilege, actively listening to your people, and then taking action.”Īnd now, during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, more than ever, being a good listener is a desired skill to have. Why listening is so crucialīeing an active listener is part of empathetic leadership, the kind that prevents employee burnout, writes Jennifer Moss, cofounder and board member at workplace insights and consultancy firm Plasticity Labs, in an article for Harvard Business Review. This makes positive performance reviews and promotions much more likely. For instance, you and your team will bring in projects on time and on budget, and your team’s productivity rates will be consistently high. If you understand and are able to motivate your colleagues and team members, those leadership abilities will be noticed by your direct report and those higher up the corporate chain. If you are a good listener, more people will open up to you. The best way to keep your thumb on the pulse of the workplace is to interact with the people in it. Part of that loyalty is based on the fact that those leaders are effective listeners, and good listeners appeal to a common denominator in humans-the desire to be heard.Ĭompetent leaders also have a deep understanding of workplace dynamics. She explains a couple of reasons for this:Ĭharismatic leaders have the greatest influence over others because their followers develop loyalty to them. “Being a good listener can help you to be a better leader,” Nance tells us. Listening builds relationships, and strong collegial relationships make for a less stressful work environment.Īll of this (decreased errors, seamless teamwork, and a healthy work environment) results in increased productivity and higher employee engagement and retention. The more you know about the individuals in your workgroup, the better you will work together. She said there are three main reasons why active listening is so important in the workplaceĪctive listening (which includes paraphrasing what is said and asking for clarification) decreases errors. We asked Nicki Nance, a psychotherapist and an associate professor of human services and psychology at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida, this question. Read more: The Open Door Policy: Pure Chaos or Creative Collaboration? Why is effective listening an important skill? Good listeners are in the moment: They don’t race ahead of the speaker, making judgments and formulating responses. That kind of focus means you should not be distracted by your phone, your own thoughts, or any other interruptions. To listen well, you have to pay attention to the speaker. It’s not a matter of being passive, but requires responses that show you understand what the speaker is saying. Unlike hearing, which just happens, you need to concentrate in order to listen effectively. What is active listening?Īctively listening to another person is a choice. If you’re constantly asking colleagues to “say again,” you might need to develop your effective listening skills. They can affect your career: Active listening can make you a better leader and manager. Good listening skills, then, are important to develop and to use. And if it occurs frequently, as sometimes happens in the workplace, it can erode employee engagement and productivity. Whatever their excuse, not being listened to is insulting. The person you’re speaking to at work is distracted, either thinking about something else or actually doing something else when you’re talking. “What did you say? It’s worth noting that the initial stages of startup funding are limited to those with especially large pockets, people called accredited investors, because the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) believes that their high incomes and net worths help shield them from potential loss. Anyone can invest in a public company, and the startup founders and early backers can sell their stakes to realize a big return on investment. Finally, a startup may decide to become a public company and open itself up to outside money via an IPO, an acquisition by a special purpose acquisition company ( SPAC) or a direct listing on a stock exchange.Next, there are Series A, B, C and D funding rounds, primarily led by venture capital firms, which invest tens to hundreds of millions of dollars into companies. After that comes seed funding from so-called “angel investors,” high-net-worth individuals who invest in early stage companies. There’s a preliminary round known as bootstrapping, when the founders, their friends and family invest in the business.Startups generally raise money via several rounds of funding: Related: Best Business Credit Cards How Are Startups Funded? When a company opens itself up to public investment, it creates an opportunity for early investors to cash out and reap their rewards, a concept in startup parlance that is known as an “exit.” This helps them establish increasingly larger market shares, which in turn lets them raise more money that then lets them grow their products and audience even more.Īll of this rapid growth and innovation is typically, implicitly or explicitly, in the service of an ultimate goal: going public. While they’re enhancing their products, startups are also generally looking to rapidly expand their customer bases. Oftentimes, a startup will begin with a basic skeleton of a product called a minimal viable product (MVP) that it will test and revise until it’s ready to go to market. They often do this through a process called iteration in which they continuously improve products through feedback and usage data. Startups aim to build on ideas very quickly. There’s another key factor that distinguishes startups from other companies: speed and growth. In turn, this delivers a scale individual restaurants can’t touch: tens of millions of potential customers, instead of thousands. In the food industry, that may mean offering meal kits, like Blue Apron or Dinnerly, to provide the same thing as restaurants-a meal prepared by a chef-but with convenience and choice that sit-down places can’t match. That is, they work from an existing template of how a business should work.Ī startup aims to create an entirely new template. A prospective restaurant owner may franchise an existing restaurant. Regular companies duplicate what’s been done before. What distinguishes a startup from other businesses, though, is the way a startup goes about doing that. A group of employees work together to create a product that customers will buy. On a high level, a startup works like any other company. On Tailor Brand's Website How Does a Startup Work? You may be most familiar with startups in Big Tech-think Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google, collectively known as FAANG stocks-but even companies like WeWork, Peloton and Beyond Meat are considered startups. That’s why many startups are known within their respective industries as “disruptors.” Rooted in innovation, a startup aims to remedy deficiencies of existing products or create entirely new categories of goods and services, disrupting entrenched ways of thinking and doing business for entire industries. Startups are young companies founded to develop a unique product or service, bring it to market and make it irresistible and irreplaceable for customers. Startup founders dream of giving society something it needs but hasn’t created yet-generating eye-popping valuations that lead to an initial public offering ( IPO) and an astronomical return on investment. Startups are businesses that want to disrupt industries and change the world-and do it all at scale. What I’ve had to do is identify the different mindsets and/or hardware available to do my work. For me, as a computer engineer, I spent most of my working time (and much of my playing time) at the computer. The most difficult set of contexts for me has to do with my work on a computer. OmniFocus allows you to only show the “Available” contexts (i.e., those with an available action), so you automatically get a list of all the places you need to go. In this case, I find it most useful to have a context called “Errands” and a child context for each place that I might need to stop off (e.g., “Home Depot”, “Starbucks”, “Target”). When I think about contexts for places, it nearly always has to do with running errands. I’ve found that having a context for a person with whom I don’t have a routine meeting just leads to my ignoring those tasks because I’m never in that context. Instead, I’d put that sort of task in my “Office” or “Home” context (or wherever I’m likely to find that person). There are lots of people with whom I may need to talk, if I have to go out of my way to find them, it doesn’t work to make a specific context for that person. The important principle is that you only really have a context for that person if you already have a routine meeting with them. For couples, this may be your weekly date night. For people in a corporate environment, this may be your weekly one-on-one with your boss. There are some people with whom I routinely have meetings of one kind or another. The best way I’ve found to identify your contexts is to ask yourself: “What situations to I routinely get into where I can do some things, but not others?” I’ve found this gives me a number of different kinds of contexts right off the bat. Then, just when things feel perfect, something changes in my life and it’s back to the drawing board. So I’ve fiddled and tweaked and adjusted until finally I think I’ve got them just right. I’ve had contexts which always feel incomplete: like I need to see it along with another context to really make a decision. I’ve had contexts which always seem to have way too many things in them. I’ve had contexts which I never seemed to look at. One of the things I’ve struggled with over the years with my GTD setup is choosing the right contexts. * Of course, you should still use the normal steps to choose an action in the moment, but I find it helpful to know that things are roughly in order of importance when scanning the list. Explicitly identifying and sorting your areas of focus can help you get clarity on whether you’re spending your time where you really want to.During your weekly review, the folders serve as reminders to do a quick mind dump for missing projects in that area of your life.By sorting your projects by importance, your tasks will also be sorted by importance when you see then in a specific context.* By default, OmniFocus will order tasks in the context view according to their order in the project view. Then, I order those folders by their relative importance to me. But, what folders? I’ve found it most useful to create a new folder for each Area of Focus (i.e., the 20 thousand foot level described in GTD), and to organize my projects within each one. FoldersĪs my projects list has grown, I’ve found it increasingly necessary to break things down using folders. When I mention this, I frequently get a question like: “Oh, how do you set it up?” Unfortunately, it’s rather difficult to answer that question in a simple conversation, so over the next few days/weeks, I’ll share some of the particular things I do which make things work well for me. I’ve been using OmniFocus for GTD since OmniFocus was released as a limited Alpha version, and I’ve spent a lot of time tweaking and tuning my system until it’s pretty much just right for me. However, OmniFocus is not a simple product, and many people have trouble figuring out use it to best effect. As I mentioned previously, I use OmniFocus extensively to keep myself organized using the Getting Things Done method by David Allen. The good news is, you can schedule a free consultation to either get peace of mind that your jaw clicking isn’t a problem, or to discuss further treatment options if it does happen to be early TMD. So clicking in addition to any of the above symptoms would be a good reason to schedule a consultation to get the problem diagnosed. Earaches, ringing, or congestion in the ears.TMD symptoms that don’t at first appear related to the jaw include: Symptoms of TMD can masquerade as other conditions and might not make you think of your jaw when you try to narrow down the problem. This way you avoid the extremely painful situation of your jaw locking and give yourself the best chance of recovery. Since clicking is an early stage of TMD (before grating and before jaw locking), it is best to diagnose the TMJ disorder early. Your jaw can click without TMD, so clicking by itself might not mean you have a problem. The Pop: Your jaw locks open or closed-a painful condition you want to avoid! Does clicking mean I have TMD? The Crackle: A grinding sound as it progresses. The Snap: A clicking sound when you open and close your jaw. So an easier way to break the progression down might be: As that gets worse, your jaw could end up locking in an open or closed position. This is the sound of bone rubbing on bone when the disc is completely deformed and there is no protective cushion at the joint. As the TMD progresses, though, you will start to hear a grating sound. The clicking sound is the top of the lower jaw slipping on and off the disc. The clicking sound indicates the jaw joints are dislocated, and the problem may get worse. If this cartilage isn’t doing its job, you may experience discomfort and hear a popping sound when opening and closing your mouth, among other symptoms. A piece of cartilage is supposed to cushion where the bones meet. “TMD” is short for “temporomandibular disorder.” TMD means something is wrong with this joint. Can you say that 10 times fast? No wonder we shortened it to “TMJ!” So what is TMD? The joint that connects the lower jaw with the skull is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). “TMD” stands for “temporomandibular disorder.” Whoa whoa whoa, big words. Let’s break down what that is, and if anything should be done about it. If your jaw makes noise when you open or close your mouth, it may indicate a larger problem called TMD. You can snap your fingers, click your tongue, clap your hands, or crack your knuckles, but one part that should not be joining the rhythm section is your jaw. |
